Monmouth County Trainer Earns CrossFit L1 Certification

Stacey Albert, the Co-Owner of Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County, has earned her CrossFit L1 Certification. The certification program included two full days of hands on and classroom work led by CrossFit Inc professionals. Participants reviewed and studied the Olympic lifts, deadlift, body weight movements and nutritional fundamentals as well.

Stacey and her husband Eddie co-own together Ultimate Fit Zone, a cross training gym in NJ that offers intense workouts for people looking to have fun, work hard and get results.

Their hallmark programs offer a variety of weight loss programs and training that include learning new barbell and kettle bell exercises, participating in calorie torching circuit and Interval Training boot camps and unique HIIT training sessions taught by renowned Monmouth County personal trainer, Bonnie Cioppa.

Stacey is also a certified Holistic Nutritionist and runs the weight loss/Nutrition programs at the gym.

At Sixty Years Old, Boot Camp Keeps Him Strong

Monmouth County Boot Camp is home to more than one sexagenarian fitness enthusiast

Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County has a reputation for its punishing cross training workouts that include boot camp circuits and HIIT training sessions. When the workouts are in session, barbells are slamming to the ground, sweat is pouring off of every body in there and metal music is blasting. One might expect to find a bunch of 20 something year olds battling the workouts but the gym is home to more than a handful of fitness fanatics in their 50s and even some that are nearing or just hit the 60 year milestone!

Nick Falcone will turn 60 this August and has been a devout boot camp client at Ultimate Fit Zone since the gym opened its doors in 2012. Staying loyal to the Monmouth County gym over the past 7 years has kept him strong and able to fight off Father Time. Most 60 year olds could not dream of doing what Nick is able to do in the gym. Heck, most 30 or 40 year olds couldn’t! Cross Training is intense and combines cardiovascular exercises such as running, rowing, jumping rope, kettle bell swings, burpees and more with strength training exercises using barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells and body weight movements in one workout. Over the years Nick has honed his skills in jumping rope, pull-ups, Olympic lifts, power lifts, hand stands (yes hand stands) and more.

While many people complain that they are ‘too old’ for certain things, Nick takes each day as a new challenge. Excited to see what else he can do, always getting better and trying his hardest.

Women Dominate Monmouth County Boot Camp Workout

Monday’s ‘911’ Cross Training boot camp workout was dominated by the women! Ranging in age from early twenties to early 60s (!) the women showed up and worked fiercely to finish the long workout!

It was a day of many ‘firsts’ for the cross training women who tackled 2,000 meters worth of rowing, 50 push-ups, 50 butter fly sit-ups, 50 pull-ups and 50 barbell push presses. For several women it was their first attempt at band assisted pull-ups on the rig!

The arduous workout took roughly 27-33 minutes to complete (each woman achieving their own personal time) and targeted every muscle in the body with high repetitions and a true test of cardiovascular endurance. From rowing to pushups, to setups to pull-ups and barbell presses, this comprehensive routine activated muscles from the every part of the body, calling upon thousands of nerve cells to be stimulated with compound movements and a strong showing of physical and mental toughness.

“I think it’s important for women to be strong,” says Co-Owner and Fitness Coach Stacey Albert. “Since the dawn of time women have been viewed as the weaker sex. It’s time to show we can be strong not just physically, but mentally too.”

“The beauty of cross training is that it takes just as much mental acuity as it does physical strength. Pacing yourself. Strategizing the workout. Mentally talking yourself through the fatigue to finish,” she adds.

Barbell Workouts Are Superior For Getting Stronger

There’s a reason why CrossFit athletes are some of the strongest athletes in the world, they do a lot of barbell work. Many strength training experts agree, if you want to get stronger, one of the best tools in your toolbox is the barbell. Compound lifts (multi-joint exercises) can produce impressive results, and traditionally they are performed with a barbell (as with any fitness training however, modifications can be made to work with dumbbells, kettle bells, etc). Compound lifts require work from many different muscles working together but moving in different patterns. This stimulates nerve cells, which is all a part of getting stronger.

A simple barbell push press will activate your legs, core and shoulders. Whereas a traditional press will largely activate the shoulders with some core. Not to say that one is better, they are just different.

For strictly isolating muscles, traditional movements are best, especially with dumbbells where each side of the body must do its own work and can’t rely on the other. For overall muscle training and working your cardiovascular system as well, CrossFit has the right idea with the barbell movements and cardio work.

At our Monmouth County cross training gym, we incorporate the barbell exercises into high intensity workouts that can last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. The goal is to increase cardiovascular endurance, increase strength, fine tune skills such as balance and explosive power and of course, build lean muscle tissue.

It’s the high rep count of these cross training workouts combined with the intense cardio (jumping rope, rowing, running, etc) that really produces changes in the body. Combined with the right diet, these are the workouts that will start showing you results in the mirror much faster. You are knocking out strength and cardio in one condensed workout. I always like to add at least 2-3 traditional lifting sessions in each week as well, for isolated muscle targeting. This accelerates strength building and also muscle development.

Cross Training Boot Camp Can Help You Be A Better Athlete

Being strong but slow in sports is not ideal.  Top athletes, whether it be running, playing football, baseball, basketball, cycling, etc,  all have one thing in common: they are strong and they can move quickly.  Being strong but slow in most sports isn’t ideal. Being able to produce force rapidly is part of what creates a top athlete.

A cross training boot camp like the one offered at Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County, combines traditional strength training exercises with athletic performance exercises to create a diverse, multi-dimensional training program that can help athletes excel to the top.

A comparison of a strict strength building exercise with a strength and force building exercise is the strict overhead press and the push press.  The strict overhead press is what many body builders and strength trainers are accustomed to.  It involves isolating the shoulder muscles to push weight over the head.  It is great for building muscle and strength.

The push press is used in CrossFit and cross training programs to help build strength, force and speed.  The push press contrasts the strict press in that it calls on a larger variety of muscles (add in the lower body) to drive, push and stabilize the bar overhead.  This helps build power, speed and stability- things all athletes can benefit from.

Developing this explosive power and speed helps athletes run faster, cycle harder, be more nimble on the field, duck and dodge tackles, exert more force and be more agile.

Many of the cross training exercises in our Monmouth County boot camp gym are based on these principals.  We use a combination of these exercises plus traditional strength movements as well as cardio and body weight bearing movements to thoroughly work and train the muscles in the body not just for strength, but for speed and athleticism.  This program can benefit anyone looking to be more fit overall, even non-athletes.

Getting Strong With the Turkish Get-up

Is it me or does it seem like the Turkish Get-up exercise is creeping its way into our workouts more often?  While it seems like pure torture, there actually are several reasons why this challenging exercise is included in several of our cross training workouts at Ultimate Fit Zone.

The hallmark of any strength building program is a strong core.  Core strength improves our overall body stability, the root of power for olympic lifting and cross training. From head to toe, the Turkish Get-up is a top player when it comes to improving our balance, coordination and strength.

If you want to increase your shoulder stability, mobility and strength, practice the Turkish Get-up.  If you want to develop your core strength and increase your unilateral leg drive- practice the turkish get up.

Because the Get-up focuses on one side of the body at a time, our minds are forced to focus on unilateral awareness and control, something we miss out on from regular bilateral exercises.

This movement is so multifaceted, with a number of different movements required to complete the exercise.  From laying in a supine position to standing up straight, starting and finishing this movement involves many steps.  That is where the strength, stability and mobility come into play.

What makes this exercise even harder at our cross training gym, is that we are often performing the TGU in the middle of different high intensity exercises that tax our cardiovascular system.  When it’s time to perform the TGU, our heart rate is already elevated and we have to control our heart rate in order to precisely perform this movement with balance and strength.

Coach JerryUltimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County is pleased to welcome Coach Jerry Baker to our team.  Jerry is a certified Concepet2 rowing instructor, an experienced, long time CrossFit athlete and a marathon runner as well.   Jerry has competed at various CrossFit events throughout Monmouth County and is a current CrossFit athlete.  He also is an avid runner, having just completed the Marine Corps Marathon.

Jerry is knowledgable and experienced in the olympic lifts you will find in many of the workouts at Ultimate Fit Zone.   His knowledge in rowing on the Concept2 rowers will help you become stronger and more efficient at your rowing. His love of CrossFit and cross training in general is an asset to our gym and we know you will enjoy learning technique and form with Coach Jerry.

Why We Wall Walk

boot camp fitness monmouth county njYou may just think that Eddie enjoys torturing us by putting wall walks in our cross training boot camp workouts, but there are actually huge benefits to performing this exercise.  Besides the obvious- it looks cool- wall walks help build superior strength in your shoulders, triceps and core muscles.

This is an incredibly difficult exercise that we reserve for our more advanced cross trainers at Ultimate Fit Zone.  Performing this exercise is pretty much how it sounds- you walk up the wall.  You can start in a plank position (or with chest flat on the ground for a more advanced start) with the soles of your feet pressed up agains the wall.  Slowly walk your feet up the wall, while you do so, walk your hands in closer to the wall as well.  The end goal is to end up in a handstand position flush against the wall.  To return to the starting position, slowly walk your hands forward while lowering your feet down the wall.

It’s been a long time since most of us have done handstands.  Wall walks are the perfect exercise to jog your brain on how to do them.

The Best Exercise To Help You Lose Weight; Box Jumps

fitness-boot-camp-monmouth-county-njIt seems as though at least 2x a week, Eddie has us jumping on boxes in his ZONE 360 boot camp workouts.  As much as we may hate them, box jumps are an incredible training technique to torch calories, melt fat, improve endurance and help us develop a stronger, leaner physique.

Box jumps are a common exercise in cross training workouts because they offer so many benefits at one time, some of which we listed above.  The primary muscles worked in jumping are the quadriceps (front part of your thigh), but box jumping also engages your core muscles as well as your arms as you use them to propel yourself up.

Overall, box jumping increases your strength and develops muscle tone.   This exercise is very demanding on the fitness-boot-camp-monmouth-countymetabolic system making it a great for maximizing fat loss. Athletes have a lot to gain from box jumps.  This is a great conditioning tool for any athlete that will improve your vertical jump, speed, explosive power, endurance and coordination.

Box jumping can burn 800 to 1,000 calories an hour (compare that to 200 to 300 calories burned per hour while walking). And since high intensity exercises such as box jumps stimulate changes in mitochondria (where fuel is converted into energy), your body will burn fat before carbohydrates— good news for anyone trying to lose weight.
