Boot Camp Is Best Weight Loss Program – According to Science

If you’re looking to get in shape, lose weight and be healthier overall, boot camp workouts are most effective, according to science.  During a recent study, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) looked into the effectiveness of different workouts for weight loss and strength and found boot camp to be one of the best group exercise options.

Researchers measured oxygen consumption, caloric burn, and heart rate of six men and six women, all between the ages of 19 and 29, during a 40 minute boot camp workout.  The study highlighted key benefits of boot camp including:

  • Weight loss: Participants burned an average of 7.8 calories every minute.  Because these workouts also incorporate strength training, you can burn more calories and see greater change in body composition (fat to lean muscle ratio).
  • HIIT Effect- the High Intensity Interval Training of boot camp is proven to help you both lose weight and build muscle.
  • Functional training- Boot camps that involve functional training like body weight movements help train your body to get through your daily activity with greater ease and strength.

Ultimate Fit Zone in Ocean, NJ offers two different types of boot camp programs.  Our ZONE 360, our hallmark workout, focuses on strength and intense cardio.  Strength components include barbell, kettle bell and body weight movements while cardio exercises can consist of running, rowing, jumping rope, body weight exercises and more.  Our second program, IT 360, is an interval training HIIT boot camp that focuses on stations and circuits to mix up and vary your training day.  IT 360 strength exercises consist of more isolated movements such as bicep curls, shoulder presses and tricep extensions using dumbbells, TRX straps and kettle bells.  Cardio exercises can include boxing, body weight movements, running, jumping rope and more.  The gym has been operating our of Monmouth County since late 2012 and also boasts successful weight loss programs led by personal trainers and a Certified Holistic Nutritionist.

How to Modify The Hand Stand Push Up

The handstand pushup is a fun exercise we do in our Cross Training boot camp in Monmouth County.  This is an impressive exercise that not everyone can do. Besides the fact that they look pretty cool when being performed, this exercise is a major strength builder for the upper body.  With gravity working against you, you are literally turned upside down in a hand stand position (the wall behind you for stability) while your upper body does the work of a pushup.

Why do the handstand pushup? You’ll strengthen multiple muscles including the triceps, shoulders, chest and lats. You’ll engage your core for stability. You’ll improve coordination. Going upside is good for you!  Going upside down, also called an ‘inversion’ provides health benefits for us including increasing circulation, bringing more oxygen flow to the brain, giving spinal discs a brief pause from the normal pressures of gravity, and improving your balance.

A great way to start building the strength to eventually do hand-stand pushups is to do a modified inverted push-up.  You can assist your inversion by doing an inverted pike off of a plyo box or a bench.  You can even go into an upside down ‘v’ on the ground (hands and feet on the ground, hips up in the air to form a bridge) and practice modified handstand push-ups.  You’ll notice a huge difference in the pressure on your shoulders and triceps.  This move can be a major strength builder.

Watch below as Kalyn demonstrates a modified handstand pushup.  Your hands should be slightly in front of your head, forming a triangle between your head and your two hands.  Slowly lower your head to the ground. Keep your head in a neutral position, being careful not to extend the neck.

There are many different boot camps in Monmouth County but none like ours. Ultimate Fit Zone at the Jersey Shore offers a true cross training experience covering 5 fundamentals of fitness:

Combining these fundamentals of fitness throughout our weekly workout routines ensures a thorough and varied workout each and every time.  We seldom do duplicate workouts, with the exception of benchmarking our progress.  This means that each and every day you walk into our Monmouth County gym you’ll be doing a new, fresh workout.  We write our workouts on our own.  We do not rely on other institutions or companies to create programming for us.  Eddie, our founder and director of training has 30 years in the fitness industry starting as a body builder, continuing as a personal trainer and presently an active CrossFit athlete.   His lengthy and diverse background is what makes our programming unique and results oriented.

The hallmark of Ultimate Fit Zone is our ZONE 360 cross training program.  We use all of the fundamentals of fitness listed above to give you a high intensity, varied workout.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays we offer T 360- this is a combination of TRX training plus our ZONE 360 program.  The TRX suspension straps add a unique, gravity inspired element to your fitness program that can’t be achieved through barbells, kettle bells, etc.  This is a great opportunity to incorporate TRX into your weekly routine and not many other gyms in Monmouth County offer it.

Beginner Boot Camp Fitness Classes

beginner-boot-camp-fitness-monmouth-countyStarting a new fitness program can be intimidating, but it’s especially daunting when you don’t have that much experience under your belt.  At Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County, we understand that.  Instead of offering ‘Beginner Boot Camp’ classes that only take place on certain days or times and don’t mesh with your schedule, instead we give you your own personal coach during our regularly scheduled boot camp sessions to guide you and support you through your first few workouts.  In addition to having your own personal coach, we also hold workshops every Sunday where we invite ALL members to learn more about the exercises we do, how to perform them with proper form and in general just get more comfortable with the equipment and workouts we do on a daily basis.

Beginners are welcome to join in any class with us.  A personal coach will attend the training sessions with you to ensure you understand the workout, the exercises  involved and how to modify the workout to your level so you don’t overdo it or injure yourself.

Our goal is not to have people come to boot camp and feel like they got ‘crushed’ by the workout or get nauseous or hurt.  We want beginners to come in and get a taste of each workout until they build up the strength and stamina to do more and more each time.  That’s why we will guide you step-by-step along the way until you are ready to ‘fly on your own’.

Rise and grind at 6am! Early morning boot camp at UFZ in Monmouth County.

Calling all early birds!  Ultimate Fit Zone’s popular ZONE 360 Boot Camp in Monmouth County will soon be offered at 6am!  Come join us for cross training madness at sunrise with your favorite barbell lifts, dumbbell exercises, kettle bell works, running, rowing, jumping rope, gymnastic moves, plyometrics and MORE.

Our 6am boot camp classes will be kicking off around the second week in September.  We are just finalizing the schedule now.

Team UFZ Runs the Asbury Park 5k

monmouth-county-fitness-gymCongrats to team UFZ on another great team 5k!  It’s becoming a tradition to run 5ks together and everyone is doing amazing!  The Asbury Park 5k was a beautiful run through asbury and along the boardwalk.  It was great to see so many of you shaving seconds and even minutes off your previous run times!

Next up we will all be tackling the Mya’s Run for Gold this October!  An annual tradition for our fit family to support the Mya Lin Terry Foundation.

Student Boot Camp Memberships For Summer

Monmouth County students home from college can take advantage of our student boot camp membership options.  No contract and just $99 a month with valid student ID gives you unlimited training at Ultimate Fit Zone in Ocean (corner of Highway 35 South and Deal Road).

Our Cross Training fitness program offers a diverse training schedule with new workouts daily.  Our schedule consists of our popular ZONE 360 Boot Camp, developed by Eddie Albert to be a mix of cross training and constantly varied workouts with a mix of strength, speed, cardio, agility, plyometrics and more.  We also offer T360 two days a week on Tuesday and Thursday.  T360 is a combination of gravity training on the TRX straps and our ZONE 360 boot camp.

Cardio junkies can take things to the  next level every Thursday night and Sunday morning with HEAT, instructed by Bonnie Cioppa.  A mix of boot camp exercises like burpees, wall balls and squats set to fast paced music and paired with light weight/high repetition strength training.  Wednesday and Saturday Bonnie teaches Plyoga- a fast paced high energy plyometrics class with Yoga poses as active recovery.
