Regina’s Weight Loss Success

weight-loss-monmouth-county-reginaRegina started her training and weight loss program at Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County in February of 2015.  She had been trying to lose weight on her own but was having some trouble.  After an initial assessment of her current diet, estimated basal metabolic rate and activity level, we redesigned a new meal plan for Regina to try to help jumpstart those stubborn pounds.  She started on our 28 Day Weight Loss Program, which we appropriately call the ‘Fat Buster’, and she has been doing great every since!

Regina never gave up although at times she was frustrated.  She stayed positive, continued to eat healthy and come to ZONE 360 boot camp training several days a week.  The results are what you see before you today.  Regina has shed about 25 pounds since starting our journey and she has become a more fit, toned, stronger and healthier version of herself.

We are so proud of Regina and all of the hard work she has put forth to better her own health.

Profit Seeking ‘Magic’ Weight Loss Solutions

I became interested in nutrition when I was about 21 years old.  I had always been working out, but never really knew much about nutrition beyond eating things that were low fat.  I remember the night when my ‘ah hah’ moment happened. I was in bed watching TV very late at night. Couldn’t sleep. An infomercial came on featuring Dr Perricone and his ‘The Wrinkle Cure’ book. The infomercial was all about how eating the right foods could dramatically affect our skin’s appearance and drastically delay and reduce the signs of aging.  I was hooked! I ordered the book, read it cover to cover and immediately began incorporating these valuable foods into my diet.  From there I was fascinated with the relationship between food and our appearance as well as our overall health.

Fast forward about 15 years later and I continue my studies into holistic nutrition- preventing and healing with foods.  I’m reading fascinating books about our ‘health care’ system (which in the holistic community is referred to as a ‘disease care’ system) and how nutrition is grossly overlooked not only as a means of prevention, but also as a  means of healing.

Think about it- how quick are some doctors to prescribe you a pill if you go in complaining of an ailment? I remember one time in my early 20s I decided to go meat free so I replaced all meat and dairy with soy alternatives.  Not too long after that I had developed large cystic acne on my cheeks and some on my back.  I never had acne before and couldn’t understand what was happening. Of course- I didn’t make the connection between my diet change and the new acne. I went to a dermatologist for help and explained to her that all of a sudden I have these large cysts that are painful.  She could easily see what I was talking about.  It was like having Mount Rushmore on my face.  She never asked me any questions, specifically, ‘has anything in your lifestyle or diet changed recently???’  Nope, she took a look and prescribed me an oral anti-biotic as well as a topical cream and I was on my way home.  Of course, neither prescription worked because I did not have an infection in my body or under my skin.  The massive amounts of soy I was consuming was mimicking estrogen in my body and causing a shift in my hormones, which produced acne.

Lucky for me a friend of mine who noticed the change in my skin was smart enough to ask if I had changed my diet.  Thankfully- the light bulb went on and I eliminated the soy so that my body could balance itself out again.  It took time- but eventually my skin cleared and I threw away the prescriptions that were incorrectly prescribed for me- in my opinion by someone who was more concerned with treating my symptoms than helping uncover the cause. This is the so called ‘magic solution’ effect our health care system has become synonymous with and never has it been more apparent than in the weight loss industry.

I want to share with you a very profound excerpt from a book I am reading by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, a leader in nutrition research for more than 40 years and best selling author.  This excerpt will really bring home the ‘magical solution’ practice of our health care system.  Dr. Campbell writes:

“The wealthy and powerful industries that make up our health system have replaced its original goal–human health–with the pursuit of ever-increasing profits…The medical, pharmaceutical, and supplement industries figured out long ago that a nation of healthy eaters would be disastrous to their profits…The magic solution…easy and foolproof, is much more appareling than a realistic solution that takes time and is complex to get right. From weight loss solutions and financial services, to cleaning supplies and beauty products, the closer the product is to magic, the easier it is to sell and the more appealing it is to buy…Worried about getting a heart attack? All you need to do is take a couple of omega-3 capsules a day.  It just takes a few seconds and it’s easy as, well, popping a pill.  Got diabetes? Hey, here’s an insulin injector pen with a digital timer on the cap so you never have to thin about doses and timing–or improving your diet. Overweight? Drink an appetite suppressant shake, or just get your stomach stapled so you literally can’t overeat or tolerate rich foods anymore. “

Dr Campbell’s point is that magic solutions work by addressing symptoms rather than causes (like the antibiotics and cream for my cystic acne).  Symptoms can easily be suppressed, but causes take more time to figure out and are more complex to deal with.  Causes require involvement and responsibility by the person with the problem.  This is ESPECIALLY true when it comes to weight loss.  Instead of helping people understand nutrition, how to plan and prepare meals, everyone wants to sell you a pill or magic ‘diet’ that will melt away the pounds and be so easy!!!! All you have to do is only eat cabbage for 2 weeks and watch the pounds melt away!!! Are you going to pop pills your whole life or only eat cabbage forever???  Or should you start addressing the issues as to why you are not eating correctly and learn new ways of getting healthy and HAPPY with nutrition?

The truth is that the majority of chronic diseases and ailments plaguing Americans today are preventable and treatable with a whole foods diet rich in plant based foods.  The ONLY way to lose weight and have it be sustainable is with a healthy, whole foods diet.  Our weight loss programs are based on whole foods and healthy eating. Not starvation.  We will NEVER require you to starve in order to lose weight.  Even our 14 day cleanse is based around 5 meals a day from whole, organic sources.

If someone is offering you a ‘magic solution’ to  your problem instead of taking the time to learn more about the root cause- they don’t have your best interest at heart. They have their own wallet at heart.  Health is complex and takes time to understand. Our problems didn’t develop overnight and they won’t be solved overnight either.  If you truly care about your health, take the time to learn more about the root causes of your symptoms instead of just covering up the symptoms with pills, injections or creams.

Which Diet Is Right For Me?

With so many diets out there to choose from (Paleo, Vegan, No Carb, High Fat, The Grapefruit diet, The Skinny Bitch Diet, Mediterranean…..etc etc) people often as us which diet would be best for them.  Their is no real short answer for that question because their is no one size fits all diet.

We tend to not tell people to prescribe to any ONE particular diet. Instead, the simplest solution is to make healthier choices, reduce your portion sizes, eat small meals frequently and make sure you get enough protein and fiber.  Probably not the answer you were looking for but it’s the truth.

The problem with many of these main stream ‘diets’ is that they don’t work great long term.  Even Paleo, and we’ll explain why.

The Problem With Paleo

We absolutely love the Paleo diet since it stresses the elimination of processed foods, a leading cause for chronic illness in our country.  We also like the emphasis on choosing fresh, organic foods.  The Paleo diet allows you to eat more fat than an average diet since it eliminates carbohydrates and legumes.  The idea is that your body will use the fat for energy instead of the carbs.  While this is true, we find that most people who do the Paleo diet long term do not succeed in losing weight.  Key word here, *most. Not all people.  There are plenty of athletes who do phenomenally well with the Paleo diet and are in excellent shape. BUT- most people end up having a hard time completely eliminating carbs.  What happens then is that they increase their fat intake and don’t completely eliminate the carbohydrates, making it difficult for them to lose weight.

We love the Paleo diet as a 14 or 21 day cleanse. It eliminated toxins in the body, hormones and sodium which can result in weight loss and a significant decrease in bloating.  At Ultimate Fit Zone in Monmouth County, we offer a great 14-day Paleo Cleanse for anyone interesting in jumpstarting their weight loss and cleaning out their body.

Going Vegan?

Going vegan has become a huge trend in Hollywood with celebrities like Samuel Jackson, Beyonce, Jay Z and now even Jennifer Lopez announcing their adoption (or temporary adoption) of the vegan diet. Vegan food is not only delicious but it’s incredibly nutritious.  Plus it gives our bodies plenty of plant based nutrients which we all need more of. If you are going to go vegan, you most likely will not get enough protein to keep your body fit and lean.  Listen carefully to what we are saying – it IS possible to get plenty of protein on a vegan diet. There are hundreds of bodybuilders and professional athletes who are vegan and get more than enough protein.  The problem with most people though is that they won’t take the time needed to ensure their vegan diet contains enough protein to help them lose weight, stay fit and healthy.  Many vegans I know are struggling with their weight because they simply replace meat or other animal products with simple carbohydrates.  That is not a healthy eating plan.  You have to research, find the best sources of vegan protein, and make sure they are incorporated into your every day diet.

Mediterranean

This is perhaps one of our favorite diets because it emphasizes modest amounts of all things good; meat, fish, poultry, nuts, healthy oils, grains, vegetables, fruits and even cheese.  The best of all worlds.  Things can go wrong however, if you indulge in too many of the good fats.    You know the saying, ‘you can never have too much of a good thing’? Well- that’s not so true.  While nuts and certain oils contain good, heart healthy fats, they are very high in calories and if you don’t balance them into your diet carefully along with reduced complex carbohydrates, you could end up packing on the pounds instead of taking them off.

Conclusion

If you want to lose weight, unfortunately there is no magic pill in a bottle.  Eating healthy, fresh foods and increasing your protein intake (whether it be meat or vegan forms of protein) is the best way to shed pounds and keep them off. We typically recommend people do three things when they come to use to lose weight:

1. Increase protein intake

2. Increase water intake

3. Increase meal frequency

How Protein Can Help You Lose Weight

Whenever anyone starts our 28 day weight loss program, the first thing we do is an assessment of their current eating regimen.  We have them journal 1 full day of meals and snacks to see what their typical habits consist of.  Nearly 100% of the time it’s immediately clear why they are not losing weight or gaining lean muscle – lack of protein.

Every cell in the human body contains protein. It is a major part of the skin, muscles, organs, and glands.  Your body needs protein to keep you healthy, build and repair tissue and make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.  Protein is also the necessary building block of bones, blood, muscles, cartilage and skin.

That alone is reason enough to ensure you are getting enough lean protein in your diet.  But when it comes to losing weight – protein will provide you with many more benefits.

Unlike carbohydrates, protein is harder for your body to break down and digest.  Therefore, after eating a protein based meal, you will feel fuller, longer.  This will curb hunger and cravings by keeping you satiated.

If you’re trying to add on more muscle, protein is your best friend.  After your body breaks down and digests protein, all that is left are amino acids.  Your body will use these amino acids to build new muscle tissue and repair muscle tissue that becomes damaged.  This will also help you recover faster after a strenuous workout.

Protein will also help regulate your blood sugar levels.  Spikes in sugar in your blood causes your body to release insulin which triggers a mechanism for your body to store fat.  When your blood sugar levels are stable, you will have less cravings, be less irritable and have more energy.

A diet rich in protein will help you lose weight and gain lean muscle.  Eating the proper amount is key, as too much protein in your diet can cause health issues.  The average person who doesn’t exercise or participate in a lot of strenuous activity should eat about a 1/2 of gram of protein for every pound that they weight.

Women dieting and exercising to lose weight can increase that to 1 gram of protein for every pound of weight.   Women and men who want to add more lean muscle can eat about 1.5 grams of protein per pound (assuming there is a good exercise program in place with strength and cardio).

If you really want to ‘bulk up’ and put on more protein, about 2 grams of protein per body weight is recommended.  You would have to be following a serious training program in order to utilize all of that protein, otherwise your body could end up excreting it through your skin (acne).

If you want to lose weight and gain lean muscle, inquire about our 28 day weight loss program.  It includes our cross training boot camp, 28 day meal plan and a 28 day supply of our organic, NON GMO meal replacement shake.
