What is Meatless Monday?
It’s a worldwide effort to get more people to not eat meat on Mondays. Why??? Because eating more plant based foods and less meat is linked to lower rates of heart disease and other chronic illnesses like cancer. It can also help you shed a few inches from your waistline. And of course we would be remiss if we didn’t point out that eating less meat helps protect animals. But going meatless for just ONE day does is also great for the planet! Going meatless once a week can also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water. A 2006 University of Chicago study found that an average U.S. diet derives 47 percent of its calories from animal sources, which results in a carbon footprint of 5,556 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. A vegetarian diet results in 3,307 pounds of carbon dioxide and a vegan diet 115 pounds.
The Meatless Monday movement has become a huge international push! Schools, college campuses, celebrities, the food industry and community leaders have all put their strength behind raising awareness for this campaign. You can too!
